 This position is not unique or unusual. Muhammad himself taught that those who abandon Islam should be punished by death. In the Hadith, he says "Whoever changes his religion, kill him." Many Muslims around the world believe this to be the rule of faith applicable to those who convert from Islam to Christianity. In fact, in most Muslim nations, conversion and Christian proselytizing are against the law.

Personally, I am for public religious expressions of all kinds. But is Christianity the only religion to be expunged from our society? I can only imagine how this story would play out if it were a Crucifix at the lion's cage with the caption, "Jesus Christ, the Lion of Judah". That statue wouldn't last five minutes at the zoo. The double standard and hypocrisy of this situation is startling. Even more concerning is that very few people can understand why Christians who have been forced to fore go all "cultural" expressions of Christ - even at Christmas and Easter - in schools and public places might want the same standard applied to other religions. Or, even better, let's bring Christmas pageants back into the schools and the Ten Commandments back into the court houses of our land. If we do that, the elephant god is no longer an issue.
